Donald FirstCover? Pat Block Disney TOO LATE FOR XMAS Picture(s) and Description:

Donald

Here's a cool item for anyone looking for a REALLY early example of Walt Disney comic book artist Pat Block's work, and it's a cover design! Back before breaking into the field, artist Pat Block and writer Ron Fernandez put together four story ideas, two of which were fleshed out in complete written form, with finished covers, when they were pitched and sold to Gladstone Publishing, back around 1993. This cover idea predates that point, back when the two were scheming about breaking into the Disney comic field in the early 1990's. This is not the final cover idea that was used for the cover of DONALD DUCK ADVENTURES which saw publication in early 1995, but rather, a gag design that the duo came up with, for this same story, and rejected themselves, before pitching any stories to Disney. It's like a lost and forgotten treasure! This cover design actually predate's Block's first published cover for "The Mystery of Widow's Gap" which saw publication in summer of 1994. Both of the finished covers to these issues, DDA#27 and DDA#30 were inked before any of the story pages were drawn, which makes this very early preliminary, (which has never been published), among, if not THE first Pat Block Walt Disney Comic book cover! Take a look at my pictures! The drawings of the ducks are a bit primitive, by Block's standards. You can see where the artist improved greatly over the next year of getting acquainted with drawing the Disney ducks. The art is on heavy watercolor paper, measuring 10" by 13 1/3". An astute collector might note Block is using the older, Disney title, and not the more modern "Donald Duck Adventure" Gladstone would later use. The watercolor to the inks is a later Block addition, but the piece shows Block's earlier style, and is kind of cool for it's historical value. This story by Ron Fernandez, "Too Late for Christmas", features Witch Hazel who is a bit confused about the time of year, and who shows up a bit too late for Halloween, and learns the meaning of Christmas. Here is an interesting, unknown tidbit about the artwork for this book. Block drew Goofy in a very "1930's" sort of style, and Disney updated all of Block's drawings of Goofy into a more modern version. Included in the auction is a signed copy of the final book, which has the classic Carl Bark's masterpiece "A Christmas for Shacktown" as the backup story. Block has included a little sketch on the cover. You get this fully watercolor and inked cover concept that never quite made it, and the signed book, all for one money. This great artwork is offered with NO HIDDEN RESERVE! It's a SUPER EARLY example of Block's Disney artwork! 10.00$ shipping in the USA, overseas bidders are welcome but need to pay exact shipping (Typically 15$ to 30$ to most places in the world.) Good luck and thanks for looking!
