Presented here is a NEAR MINT copy of ROCKET'S BLAST #19. I was the original subscriber and it has been expertly preserved since that time. Hello! My name is Howard Brenner, and as some of you may know, I was one the original members of comic book fandom back in the mid 60s. Along with my partner-in-crime Jeff Gelb, we published the fanzines MEN OF MYSTERY and FLARE COMICS. But now, I'm clearing out the basement, and my old well-cared for fanzines are among the first things which are going to go. Here is your opportunity to nab some of the earliest and rarest fan publications in this hobby. In the early days of the hobby there weren’t many people actively writing and communicating with each other. Fanzines were put out in very limited numbers. The average circulation of most zines was under a hundred copies. Adzines printed lots more copies, mainly because in those days there were no comic conventions or shows, so buying thru the mail was the only way a collector had of filling in the issues he needed. And here’s the other kicker. Of all the fanzines printed and distributed among us very eager young fans, how many actually survived? Not many!! Most folks regularly read their newly arrived zines, maybe wrote a letter of comment, and then tossed them out the next week. Some people simply left the hobby and threw out all their fanzines. Copies got lost during moves, or were thrown out rather than being hauled around to some new location, or got trashed because of adverse storage situations. The survival rate is very very slim indeed. These things are genuinely rare. As for me, I always carefully stored every zine I received, so almost everything which is going to be listed here is in excellent condition, with perhaps the trace of a subscription fold down the center of some (that’s they way many were mailed out in those days, mostly folded longways and stapled shut at the corners, or sometimes folded horizontally and taped shut on the bottom. Sending fanzines in mailing envelopes was rare, because mailing envelopes cost money, and we sure didn’t have any extra money to squander on something that extravagant! Some of these fanzines are excellent, with well written, insightful articles, and well done art. Others are pretty poor. Hey, we were all young and enthusiastic back in those days. Over the next few months, I will be listing items from my collection. So please check back often!
